Passive microwave remote sensing observations at L-band provide key and global information on surface soil moisture vegetation water content, which are related to the Earth carbon cycles. Only two space-borne sensors currently operating: SMOS, launched end of 2009 thus providing now a 10-year data set SMAP, beginning 2015. This study provides state-of-the-art scientific overview SMOS-IC retrieval based SMOS observations. product aims improved performance independence auxiliary data, features for robust applications. The includes both (SM) optical depth (L-VOD) basis several studies evaluating impact climate anthropogenic activities aboveground stocks. Since release first version, algorithm has been significantly changed in support applications, but no document is available report these changes. paper fills this gap by analyzing science questions development, reviewing application results presenting an extensive description last version (version 2) considering changes comparison previous (V105).
